Why previous year papers beat guide books
A guide book tells you what the syllabus says. A past paper tells you what the examiner actually did with it — which chapters carry the marks, which ones appear once a decade, and how much reading speed the paper quietly assumes. For most state recruitment and board exams the difference between the two is large, and it is the reason candidates who drill past papers tend to out-score candidates who only read.
The useful way to work through them is in sequence. Take three or four consecutive years of the same exam, sit them under real time pressure, and mark them honestly. Patterns show up fast: the recurring question types, the sections where you lose time rather than marks, and the topics that are worth a second revision pass. Once you have that picture, targeted practice on individual topics is worth far more than another full mock.
